China wants compensation for US metal tariffs, goes to WTO

Beijing has taken the US’s recently approved tariffs on steel and aluminium to the WTO, Bloomberg reports, seeking compensation for China’s lost trade as a result.

The filings were presented to the WTO as challenges to Washington’s justification of its protectionist measures on grounds of national security, making the counter claim that they were merely safeguard measures to protect domestic producers, a practice not in-line with WTO guidelines.

The US will have the opportunity to address the accusation directly, however the case may require WTO arbitration should the two countries fail to come to an agreement on the nature of the tariffs.
