China’s arms exports rose 143% in the last five years over the previous half-decade, overtaking Germany to make it the third-largest arms exporter, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing an annual report on weapons transfers from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. China represents only 5% of a global export market valued at more than US$300 billion annually, far behind the US (31%) and Russia (27%) during the same period, but still having doubled over the last decade. Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar accounted for two-thirds of China’s exports; Africa has also become a key market, with sales to 18 countries on the continent.
