China’s battery makers expand sodium-ion push

October 23, 2026

Tianneng Battery Group has launched sodium-ion batteries for electric two- and three-wheelers, reportsCaixin. The move targets the light electric vehicle market with a lineup that includes models designed for extreme cold.

Released October 20, Tianneng’s new batteries have capacities ranging from 24 to 72 ampere-hours. The company says a low-temperature version can charge at minus 30 degrees Celsius and retain nearly 90% of its discharge capacity at that temperature. That version carries a 39-month warranty.

Rivals are also expanding. In June, a subsidiary of Chaowei Power began production at the first phase of a 2 GWh sodium-ion battery project. Two-wheeler maker Yadea Group unveiled a sodium-ion battery in March 2026 that it said was compatible with its existing lead-acid and lithium-battery models.
