China’s box-office take this year has already passed RMB30 billion (US$4.71 billion) to overtake the total for the entirety of 2014, Reuters reported, citing state media. The takings mark a 48.5% increase over 2014, and mean China is on track to hit RMB40 billion this year, state news agency Xinhua said, citing the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television. Box office receipts in the United States and Canada combined fell 5% last year but still hit $10.4 billion, according to the Motion Picture Association of America. China’s takings jumped 34% in the same period. (For more on China’s film industry, see CER’s special report.)
