The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) aims to deliver its first C919 single-aisle jet, the first Chinese-made large passenger aircraft, to customers in 2021, the People’s Daily reports.
The C919 could be a game-changer in the global aviation industry, as COMAC seeks to compete with the US’s Boeing and Europe’s Airbus. Yuan Wenfeng, the director of the C919 Project Office, has said previously that the C919 is designed to reduce China’s dependence on the two companies.
COMAC aims to gain certification for the C919 within three to four years, according to Lu Zheng, a deputy general manager at COMAC, and certification in the US and Europe soon after. The approval process “should not have any impact” on when the company delivers its first C919 to China Eastern Airlines, COMAC’s first customer, Lu added.
