China's cumulative CO2 emissions soon to pass those of US

China’s cumulative greenhouse gas emissions since 1990 are set to outstrip those of the United States either this year or next, Reuters reported, citing estimates from experts in the US and Norway. The Center for International Climate and Environmental Research, Oslo says China will overtake the US this year, while US-based World Resources Institute predicts China’s cumulative emissions will surpass those of the US in 2016. The move could conceivably put more pressure on Beijing ahead of climate talks in Paris this December. (CER has calculated that by 2035, China could burn 42-47% of the world’s carbon budget to mid-century.)
