Sharp global reductions in extreme poverty over the past 15 years are in large part the result of economic growth in China, The New York Times reported, citing analysis of a report released Monday by the United Nations. The final evaluation of the Millenium Development Goals set 15 years ago by the UN to improve the lives of the poor around the world claimed success, but critics said setting global targets alone was not instructive. “You can’t compare one country to another. It doesn’t give us much, in terms of telling us what to do,” said Dean Karlan, an economics professor at Yale University.
