China's Huawei predicts rapid growth in Africa

China’s biggest telecom-equipment producer Huawei Technologies said revenue in south and east Africa may increase by 30% by 2015, on the continent’s rapid growth, Bloomberg reported. The company plans to tap the underdeveloped African market that has low mobile-broadband use and a rising demand for smartphones, said Li Dafeng, regional president for Huawei. Huawei also plans to expand in South Africa, as the country aims for 100% broadband coverage by 2020, Li said. The company reported a 15% increase in revenue in 2011 year-on-year for Africa, Li said. “There is still much room to grow, so we can see that in the next three years network availability will be improved greatly,” said Radoslaw Kedzia, Huawei’s regional chief technology officer.  Less than 5% of Africa’s inhabitants have mobile-broadband subscriptions, compared to more than 10% in all other countries, according to the International Telecommunications Union.
