The average textile operator cost in mainland China last year was Yn3.43 per hour, just 3 per cent of the average cost in the US. However, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh all came out slightly cheaper in the report by US management consultants Werner International. A separate figure for coastal China gave an average hourly cost of Yn5.75.
China once again dominated market share for spindles and looms in 2002, according to a survey by the Zurich-based International Textile Manufacturers Federation. The country bought 88,000 wool spindles and 231,000 open-end rotors. China was also the main destination for double heater spindles (89,000 units) and shuttle-less looms (51,300 units, or more than double the 2001 total).
