China's large ports increase cargo throughput

The cargo throughput and export volume of China’s large ports increased in April, reported state media. According to figures released by the Ministry of Transport, cargo throughput increased 20.2% on year in the first quarter of 2010 to 2.48 billion tons, while container throughput grew 22.4% on year. Passenger throughput fell 18.5% on year to 295 million in the first quarter of 2010. Approximately 206.5 million tons of goods were forecast to be exported via China’s large ports, an annual increase of 27.2%. In China, large ports are classified as sea ports with an annual cargo throughput above 15 million tons and river ports with an annual throughput above 10 million tons.
