China's rising discontent

Social instability may spread through China unless Beijing quickly addresses the widespread and growing unrest over worsening pollution and government-backed land requisitions, experts say. In the last week alone, three violent demonstrations broke out, underscoring what analysts say equates to a "breakdown of the social contract" between common citizens and provincial government officials seeking to mine economic growth at all costs.
