The one-day trial of Xu Zhiyong, a prominent Chinese social activist, ended on Wednesday and is now awaiting the verdict, The Wall Street Journal reported. Evidence given in court showed that Wang Gongquan sought to help fellow activist Xu plan illegal activities that disturbed public order. Xu’s trial comes amid a crackdown on political dissent that has included stricter controls online and in traditional media. Xu faces a possible five-year prison sentence for a series of protests he helped organize in Beijing last year over corruption and access to education.
