Chongqing Municipality reported nearly RMB 137.68 billion of
GDP in the first eight months, up 11.1 percent from the same period last year. The growth
rate is about 0.9 percent higher than last year, according to government statistics. In 1997,
Chongqing was designated China's fourth municipality, joining Beijing, Shanghai and
Tianjin under the direct leadership of the central government.
