Cisco denies aiding online censorship

A Cisco Systems executive told a US Senate subcommittee that an internal document about China’s goal to "combat Falun Gong" did not reflect the company’s views, AP reported. Cisco general counsel Mark Chandler said he regreted that the anti-Falun Gong comments, made by a Chinese government official in 2002, had been included in a presentation describing China’s technology status. A slide used in the presentation said China’s technology goals were to stop network-related crimes, guarantee the security and services of a public network, and "combat ‘Falun Gong’ evil religion and other hostiles." US internet firms operating in China have come under scrutiny and criticism for helping the government control access to information online, as well as providing information to help authorities track down dissidents.
