CNNC in talks to build 1 GW reactor in Pakistan

China National Nuclear Corp. (CNNC) said it is in negotiations with Pakistan to build a 1 gigawatt nuclear plant in the country, the Wall Street Journal reported. CNNC has already been involved in the construction of two smaller 300-megawatt reactors. It also has contracts to build a further two 300 MW reactors. US and Indian officials criticized the signing of those contracts earlier this year over proliferation concerns. Pakistan is not signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and US officials said China needed to receive a special exemption from the Nuclear Suppliers Group, a body established to regulate the nuclear trade of which China is a member. CNNC did not provide details about the 1 GW reactor, including whether it would be based on indigenous or imported design.
