China’s imports of coal rose by 7% in September from August as experts point to an increased demand for electricity in the country, Bloomberg reported. China, the world’s largest coal user and producer, imported 12.5 million metric tons last month, three times as much as it imported in September 2008. Li Dagang, a coal analyst at Essence Securities in Shanghai said that domestic demand for coal was bouncing back as the economy improved. In July the government reopened small mines to meet rising demand for coal, which creates 80% of China’s power, causing imports to decline before rising again in August.
