In an annual speech to the Communist Party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, President Hu Jintao said the party should make efforts to prevent bribery during the global economic downturn, the South China Morning Post reported. Hu said that the Commission should ensure that Beijing’s economic directives are implemented, monitor leading party cadres for abuses of power and stem corruption in areas where it is widespread. Commission statistics showed that 4,960 officials with a rank above the county level were punished in the year up to November 30, 2008. During the same time period, 151,000 officials were disciplined for corruption, dereliction of duty and disregard for the people’s interests.
