Chinese coal imports to double by 2015

China’s coal import demand will more than double in the next four years and India will be close behind, as both countries’ power industries continue to expand rapidly, Reuters reported. According to trading house Noble Group, China’s thermal coal imports could increase from 90 million tonnes in 2011 to about 200 million tonnes by 2015. Chinese demand for coal fluctuates according to domestic coal prices and whether these are high enough to encourage more electricity output from coal-fired power producers. Coal imports may rise significantly this year on concerns that China will experience its worst power shortages since 2004. The country raised power prices on Monday.
