Political violence continues in Tianjin, Hebei

A man set off a bomb outside a local government headquarters in the northeastern city of Tianjin on Friday, making it the third explosion at government offices across China in as many weeks, the Wall Street Journal reported. State media said that the man had gambling and family troubles, and was looking to take “revenge against society.” The attack follows the bombing on Thursday of a police station in Hunan province, and another explosion two weeks ago at government offices in Fuzhou city. Mass protests also took aim at government buildings in the central province of Hubei last week, after a Chinese bureaucrat died in police custody after he challenged a land deal. While the incidents appear unrelated and the timing may be coincidental, most seem to have been triggered by popular frustration at local-level government corruption.
