The iPad 2’s Saturday debut in the Apple Store (AAPL.NASDAQ) in Beijing’s Sanlitun village caused a shopping riot that put two people in hospital, the South China Morning Post reported, citing state media. Authorities said that a foreign Apple employee used his fists and a stick on customers as staff tried to remove scalpers and queue-jumpers from the line. The store had to close temporarily as the ensuing chaos resulted in a smashed window. An angry mob surrounded the store and demanded that Apple hand over the foreign employee until police arrived. The store has since reopened, but the incident is being cited in online chatrooms as an example of racial discrimination against Chinese people.
