Taiwan’s pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) claimed that mainland Chinese hackers have been attacking its computers on a daily basis since March, ahead of the island’s presidential elections in January, the Wall Street Journal reported. The DPP said it found that hackers with IP addresses connected to the mainland had gained access to the email accounts of officials from the party’s headquarters, in addition to the campaign office for its presidential candidate, Tsai Ing-wen. Even though Tsai is considered a moderate and has expressed her desire to improve ties with China, Beijing is heavily in favor of Kuomintang candidate and current president Ma Ying-jeou. Despite a recent thaw in relations, Taiwan and mainland China continue to engage in espionage against each other.
