The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) is tightening controls on the use of corn for industrial purposes, AP reported. New projects will not be approved and ongoing projects using corn for industrial purposes will be suspended, including a ban on projects that convert corn into fuels. Through the restrictions the NDRC aims to "correctly handle corn production, keep food prices stable and ensure food security." Surging food prices pushed inflation to an 11-year high in August. China's corn consumption totaled 134 million tons last year, with 64% used for feed for livestock and poultry 27% used for industrial processing.
