Critical property tycoon sees microblog account shuttered

The Cyberspace Administration of China has shut down the popular Weibo microblog account of property tycoon Ren Zhiqiang, The Financial Times reported, citing a statement published on Sunday the administration. The statement accused Ren of spreading “illegal information that had caused a bad impact” and called on other top microbloggers to “actively spread positive energy”. Ren had recently criticized the party leadership for ratcheting up controls on mainland media, telling his 38 million followers in one Weibo post that the leadership ought not “waste taxpayers’ money on things that do not provide them with services”.
