About 100,000 people were stuck in Guangzhou’s main train station on Monday due to delays caused by bad weather, The New York Times reported, citing local media. Snow and ice in central China have led to an especially rough start for the week-long Lunar New Year holiday that begins on Sunday, with photos showing huge crowds waiting at the station through Monday night. On Tuesday morning, 22 trains were delayed by at least an hour, according to the Guangzhou Railway Corporation. By Tuesday afternoon crowds had dropped to 22,500–but only after city officials had restricted road and subway access to the station, according to Southern Metropolis Daily.
