CYBRA and Key West Technologies have signed an agreement with the PRC Ministry of Transportation’s Waterborne Transportation Institute (WTI) to form a joint venture to develop, manufacture and market shipment tracking and monitoring products.These products will consist of smart shipping containers and other smart transport units that will create an unprecedented level of visibility in maritime shipping. (Smart, here, you understand, does not mean that they will be painted in elegant colours. Smart means they can be traced and directed electronically. Of course, they could still be painted in smart colors.) Basically a shipping company will be able to tell exactly where a container is located and what is happening to it.
The joint venture company will be named Beijing Smart Shipping Technologies or SST for short and to its friends.
Eye for Transport reports the underlying technology will be based on CYBRA’s EdgeMagic RFID Control Software and Key West Technologies’ Globe Tracker Global Tracking & Monitoring Data Exchange Network, as well as additional intellectual property developed under the joint venture. In other words, this will be RFID — widely used already in the shipping and shopping worlds —- with specialised sensors, SST’s products and services. This will allow shippers to track and monitor the position and condition of goods in transit, in real-time, anywhere in the world.
