China will need to increase power output by 40,000 megawatts (MW) per year to maintain GDP growth rates of 8%, according to a Datang International Power Generation executive. But China can only expect to see actual increases of 30,000 MW each year over the next three years, the executive said. Datang Power, which plans to list on mainland markets next year, is increasing output by 2,300 MW by building new coal-powered generation capacity this year. Datang plans to use funds from its public offering to continue building coal-powered plants over the next two years, increasing its capacity by similar amounts each year.
