Dead pigs in Shanghai river rise to 6,600

The number of dead pigs found in a river that supplies water to Shanghai more than doubled from the previous day’s estimate to 5,916 as of 3 pm Tuesday, Bloomberg reported, citing the city government’s official microblog. The hogs appear to have floated down the river from neighboring Zhejiang province, the Shanghai government said. Ear tags from 14 of the hogs indicated they came from Jiaxing, a pig-farming region of Zhejiang that slaughters about 4.5 million hogs each year. Regulators said there was no sign that diseased pork had entered the city’s markets.
