A leading Chinese advocate of internet freedoms has accused US portal Yahoo of betraying its customers and supporting dictatorship by providing information on journalist Shi Tao to Chinese authorities. Shi subsequently received a 10-year jail sentence in April for "leaking state secrets", having apparently revealed details of a media crackdown by party propaganda officials. Veteran dissident Liu Xiaobo, who made the criticisms in an open letter to Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, branded the company "shameless" in an interview with the Financial Times. Yahoo maintains it was legally compelled to supply the information.
