The Dominican Republic is cutting formal relations with Taipei in favour of Beijing, reports the FT this morning, triggering scorn from Taiwanese officials over China’s foreign policy.
There are now only 19 countries with which Taiwan, or the Republic of China as it self-identifies, has formal relations.
Taiwan’s foreign minister Joseph Wu accused Beijing of buying countries’ allegiance with dollar-diplomacy, but that such a strategy will only further disaffect the island’s population from the mainland.
“Beijing’s attempts at foreign policy have only served to drive a wedge between the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, erode mutual trust, and further harm the feelings of the people of Taiwan,” said Wu, adding that China has a poor track record of following through on promises made to former diplomatic allies of Taiwan.
