Drought alert for Sichuan

At least 10 million people in Sichuan Province have been left without easy access to clean drinking water following a prolonged heatwave and lack of rainfall, the South China Morning Post reported. A month-long drought, which has been described by state media as the worst in China in 50 years, has also led to a drop in the level of the Yangtze River at Chongqing, the most heavily-populated riverside city, to 3.5 metres – the lowest since records began after the 1892 flood season, according to state media. Authorities in Sichuan issued a red drought alert, the most severe in the four-level drought-warning system.
