On the same month as the Tangshan earthquake three decades ago that left tens of thousands of dead, a quake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale rocked Hebei province and jolted Beiing. It struck at 11:56 am. State media said the quake aroused stronger reactions in Beijing and Tianjin than in Wenan, Hebei Province, where life continued almost uninterrupted. Officials say some 17 quakes of similar intensity hit China every year. Aftershocks were felt as far as Shangdong and Shanxi provinces while some Beijing residents said they felt the earth move. The Tangshan earthquake in 1976 left 240,000 dead and 160,000 severely injured.
