The five red provinces account for 79 percent of urban households earning RMB 80,000 a year in 2003 and 54 percent by 2012.
They also account for 57 percent of all those earning over RMB 40,000 in 2003, dropping to 35 percent by 2012. The eight red and yellow provinces account for 85 percent of urban households earning RMB 80,000 a year in 2003 and 67 percent by 2012. They also account for 68 percent of all those earning over RMB 40,000 in 2003, dropping to 49 percent by 2012. These are the critical provinces and cities to look at if your product or service has a price point that requires an income over RMB 40,000 pa.
In many of the other areas, high income households make up less than 3 percent of the total households and distribution costs are significant if not prohibitive.
The 14 red, yellow and green provinces on the map account for 94 percent of urban households earning RMB 80,000 pa in 2003 and 85 percent by 2012. They also account for 85 percent of all those earning over RMB 40,000 in 2003, dropping to 72 percent by 2012.
