Egyptian president marks first China visit

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi met Chinese President Hu Jintao in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People Tuesday during Morsi’s first state visit to Beijing, an event that underscored China’s growing role in the Middle East, The Wall Street Journal reported. Morsi signed deals including a US$200 million loan from China Development Bank to the National Bank of Egypt to aid in the country’s economic development. The high-profile visit shows that China’s policy of non-interference when dealing with Arab Spring unrest has not destroy its ties with the region, said Chinese analysts. “If China was so bad for the Middle East people, I don’t think President Morsi would come to China,” said Wang Suolao, who researches China-Middle East relations at Peking University.
