[photopress:IT_EMC.jpg,full,alignright]Storage company EMC — the name always reminds one of Einstein’s famous equation for it is often shown as EMC² although it has nothing to do with E=mc². The first C stands for the third partner who left before the formation of the company and the second C stands for the Corporation) — is going to invest US$1 billion in R&D in China through 2012 .
Most of the money will go to EMC’s new research center in Beijing. The facility will complement its existing R&D operation in Shanghai.
More than 200 engineers will work in the new R&D center and focus on EMC’s core technologies including information storage, virtualization, security, resource management and content management and archiving.
The firm’s chief executive Joseph Tucci, in Beijing for the announcement, said when EMC entered the Chinese market in 1996 the company had 4,700 employees in its Asia Pacific and Japan region. It expects to have 1,000 employees in China by the end of the year.
EMC said it continues to build future talent and has alliances with key universities in China through its EMC Academy Program. This includes curriculum building, research, and funding programs.
