A draft law promoting renewable energy use was submitted to the standing committee of the National People's Congress on Saturday, the opening day of a five-day session, Xinhua reported. According to the state news agency, Beijing aims to increase China's renewable energy use from 3% of overall energy consumption in 2003 to 10% in 2020 and has ordered state grids to increase their purchases of renewable energy which includes hydro, wind, solar, geo-thermal and marine-generated sources. China had to move quickly to develop renewable energy to meet the needs of rapid economic development and to counter heavy pollution and dependence on energy imports, Mao Rubai, director of the NPC's Environment and Resource Protection Committee said, according to Xinhua.
