Mobile telecom giant Ericsson (ERIC.NASDAQ) announced plans yesterday to deepen cooperation with its Chinese counterpart Datang (0763.HK) to develop TD-LTE technology for next-generation mobile networks, Reuters reported. TD-LTE is the basis for products like WiMax, and is favored by China Mobile (0941.HK), Russian telecom operator Svyazinvest and Qualcomm (QCOM.NASDAQ). The new agreement will combine Ericsson’s leading position in mobile network gear with Datang’s TD technology. Datang owns many core patents in China’s home-grown TD-SCDMA technology currently deployed in 3G mobile networks here. TD-SCDMA is expected to see seven-fold subscriber growth this year. As part of the agreement, Ericsson will integrate TD-SCDMA into its own 3G offerings.
