Taiwan line Evergreen has been granted a licence to deploy its own vessels on services calling at Shanghai and Ningbo. Evergreen already has a licence for Yantian, but until now has always used its subsidiary Lloyd Triestino to serve other trades calling at ports in China. The 5,300 teu container ship Ever Urban was due to make the first call at Shanghai and Ningbo on the China/Europe Mediterranean service in early April.
Since the late 1990s, Evergreen has either transferred tonnage to Lloyd Triestino for its mainland calls, or put together charter agreements that allowed the Italian line to operate services over Shanghai and Ningbo, with Evergreen using its own through bills of lading to move cargo on the routes to and from the US west coast and Europe.
A Chinese government source said it was a natural progression for Evergreen to be granted a licence to have its own capacity calling at Shanghai and Ningbo. He added that Evergreen was likely to underline its commitment by switching ships back to the parent company.
