Fairer subway fare system for Beijing

March 20, 2007

[photopress:beijing_subway_1.jpg,full,alignright]A more equitable fare system will be launched on the Beijing subway early next year allowing passengers to pay for the ride depending on the distance traveled instead of the current flat fare.

Automatic ticket-selling machines will be installed in stations on lines 1 and 2 in July and the project is scheduled to be completed at the end of the year.

Line 5, which will come into use in September, will have ticket-selling equipment installed from the beginning. This will also apply to upcoming metro lines, including line 10 and the rail link between the city and its airport which will start running next June in time for the Olympics.
