FedEx has launched four non-stop flights per week from Hong Kong to its Indianapolis hub using a Boeing 777. The service, which is now in operation, is the first non-stop Asian cargo route to Indianapolis.
It is expected to be a boon for the logistics industry in Indianapolis and boost trade between Midwestern companies and the region around Hong Kong, a shipping hub serving China’s booming manufacturing districts.
Indianapolis is the second continental US city handling Asian flights for the carrier. FedEx earlier this year started flying its new Boeing 777s from Shanghai to its primary terminal in Memphis, Tennessee.
FedEx also operates a refueling and cargo sorting depot in the city of Anchorage in Alaska.
IndyStar.com reports FedEx has taken delivery of 11 Boeing 777 Freighters, which can carry 178,000 pounds (80,739 kilos) of cargo about 6,670 miles (10,734 kilometers) before refueling.
