The Export Commodities Fair held in Guangzhou in October 2001 had fewer visitors and a smaller volume of agreed deals than the fair held six months earlier, Xinhua reported. By October 25, the last full day of the fair, the total number of visitors had reached 101,382, down by 9.4 per cent on April and 3.5 per cent below the October 2000 level. By October 24, the total volume of deals agreed at the fair was US$10.3bn, a fall of 12.7 per cent from April and 1.7 per cent from October 2001.
The deputy director of the fair, Hu Chusheng, said that the decline in volume was due to changes in the global economy and the impact of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US.
