French bank BNP Paribas SA created the first wholly foreign owned bank on the mainland. Paribas announced that it bought all of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China's shares from the two banks' 1992 50:50 joint venture.
The capital of the operation rose to RMB 555 million (US$67.1 million) after the purchase.
