First wholly foreign owned bank

French bank BNP Paribas created modern mainland China's first wholly foreign owned bank. Paribas announced that it bought all of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China's shares from the two banks' 1992 50:50 joint venture.

The capital of the operation rose to RMB 555 million (US$67.1 million) after the purchase.
