Two foreign broadcasters have been given Chinese government approval to broadcast to hotels with three or more stars and to compounds where foreigners live, Variety said. The broadcasters are Bloomberg Television, which will beam its 24-hour Asia-Pacific channel into China, and Phoenix TV, the Hong Kong-based subsidiary of News Corp, which will show its 24-hour Mandarin-language news channel.
Star TV has won approval for similar broadcasting rights for its Mandarin language entertainment channel Xingkong Weishi, the Financial Times said. News Corp, Star TV's parent, has said that it plans to invest more than US$100m in the channel over the next three years. It is currently shown by a local cable company to about 1m viewers in Guangdong province.
News Corp has separately signed an agreement with Hunan Broadcasting Group to jointly finance and produce television programmes.
