Foreign trade soars in 2003

China's foreign trade last year rose by 37.1% to reach more than US$851 billion, according to customs figures.

Imports last year soared 39.9%, totaling US$412.8 billion, while exports rose 34.6% to reach US$438.3 billion.

The figures translated into an overall trade surplus of US$25.5 billion for China. Japan, the US and the EU remained the country's three largest trading partners.

Trade with Japan – the top trading partner for the eleventh year – registered a 31% increase to $133.5 billion.
