Beijing’s No 1 Intermediate People’s Court has sentenced former China Development Bank vice-president Wang Yi to death with a two-year reprieve, state media reported. Wang was found guilty of abusing his power and of accepting bribes totaling US$1.75 million between 1999 and 2008. "As the amount of bribes Wang took is very large, and he initiated asking for the bribes, Wang should have been sentenced to death," the court said. "However, considering he had been honest and confessed to his crimes and returned all the money, the death sentence does not have to be executed immediately," it said. Wang is likely to have his sentence commuted to life imprisonment.
