Chongqing’s former justice chief Wen Qian was on Tuesday sentenced to death by the city’s No. 5 Intermediate People’s Court, the South China Morning Post reported. Wen is the highest-ranking official to receive punishment amid an ongoing crackdown on organized crime in the southwestern municipality. He was found guilty of taking bribes, sheltering organized crime syndicates, possessing assets he could not account for and rape. Wen had also earlier confessed to forcing underage girls to have sex with him. Before becoming head of Chongqing’s judicial administrative bureau Wen had been deputy police chief for 16 years.
