Police in Shaanxi province have arrested four people in connection with dairy products contaminated with the chemical melamine, AFP reported. The four arrested in Weinan, Shaanxi, included three officials with Lekang Dairy, a company blacklisted in a contamination scandal in 2008. They have been charged with "manufacturing and selling food that does not meet hygiene standards." Beijing has sent inspectors to 16 provinces to check for further contamination. Recent reports in state media said authorities in Guizhou pulled products of three companies from store shelves after they were found to contain melamine. In 2008, 300,000 people were sickened and at least six babies killed after consuming contaminated milk powder.
