Further delay on 3G licenses

Licenses for 3G phones will not be issued until late 2006 or 2007, state media reported. Industry watchers have lost count of how many times the licenses have been delayed since 2002 and many thought the first ones would be issued on May 17, World Telecommunications Day. Now, Beijing-based Norson Telecom Consulting believes the licenses may be issued between the end of October and early November, while a recent UBS report suggests that China will delay until 2007. Ministry of Information Industry officials did not comment on the issue. There are three 3G technologies available, one developed in the US, one in Europe and one in China.
