China's imports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in January reached 641,000 tonnes, 25 per cent more than in the same month of 2002 and 35 per cent more than in December 2002, according to Chinese Customs figures. The increase was attributed to stock-building ahead of the Chinese Spring Festival, which fell in the first week of February this year.
Imports from Asian suppliers such as Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, rose by 32 per cent year-on-year to 310,800 tonnes, while imports from the Middle East increased by 14 per cent to 263,600 tonnes. China OGP, the petroleum intelligence service affiliated to Xinhua, said that Chinese LPG imports totalled 6.26m tonnes in 2002.
