GDP surges in Shenzhen

Shenzhen's GDP recorded an eight-year high of RMB 286 billion (US$34.5 billion) in 2003, a 17.3% surge over the previous year, according to government figures.

The industrial sector accounted for 60% of the city's overall economy in terms of GDP.

Despite the fast-growing macroeconomic figures, the average disposable income for each resident rose just 4% in 2003 to RMB 25,936 (US$3,134).
